Motorola has today announced a modern successor to one of the most iconic phones ever released: the Razr V3. The popular flip-phone was first released in 2004 and had been a huge success for the company as it went on to sell over a 100M units. The clamshell design was immensely popular as it was a lot thinner and had a unique design. The new Razr takes the core aspects of this design and ports it over to the latest 2019 technologies. At the heart of the new smartphone lies Motorola’s take on foldable displays, giving the new Razr a proper modern “full body screen” experience.
A nice look at how they got the fold to work. We’ll see.

We have been teased with AMD’s next generation processor products for over a year. The new chiplet design has been heralded as a significant breakthrough in driving performance and scalability, especially as it becomes increasingly difficult to create large silicon with high frequencies on smaller and smaller process nodes. AMD is expected to deploy its chiplet paradigm across its processor line, through Ryzen and EPYC, with those chiplets each having eight next-generation Zen 2 cores. Today AMD went into more detail about the Zen 2 core, providing justification for the +15% clock-for-clock performance increase over the previous generation that the company presented at Computex last week.

One of the most popular processors of the last decade has been the Intel Core i7-2600K. The design was revolutionary, as it offered a significant jump in single core performance, efficiency, and the top line processor was very overclockable. With the next few generations of processors from Intel being less exciting, or not giving users reasons to upgrade, and the phrase ‘I’ll stay with my 2600K’ became ubiquitous on forums, and is even used today. For this review, we dusted off our box of old CPUs and put it in for a run through our 2019 benchmarks, both at stock and overclocked, to see if it is still a mainstream champion.

The Intel Optane Memory H10 Review: QLC and Optane In One SSD

The Optane Memory H10 does not introduce any new ASICs or any hardware to make the Optane and QLC portions of the drive appear as a single device. The caching is managed entirely in software, and the host system accesses the Optane and QLC sides of the H10 independently. Each half of the drive has two PCIe lanes dedicated to it.
Could work, but alas.
Compatibility with older platforms and non-Intel platforms is mostly as expected, with only the NAND side of the H10 accessible—those motherboards don’t expect to find two PCIe devices sharing a physical M.2 x4 slot, and aren’t configured to detect and initialize both devices.

Instead of being a benefit to testing, what our investigation found is that when HPET is forced as the sole system timer, it can sometimes a hindrance to system performance, particularly gaming performance. Worse, because HPET is implemented differently on different platforms, the actual impact of enabling it isn’t even consistent across vendors.
This is a kinda interesting read, and also a good cautionary tale from the “turn all the knobs” crypt. Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of many benchmarks.
OpenBSD also suffered a bit from HPET slowdown, resolved by switching to TSC.

The Intel SSD 750 was the first to bring the large performance benefits of NVMe to the consumer market. It was soon eclipsed by the Samsung 950 PRO, which offered much better real-world performance thanks to better optimization for consumer workloads - the Intel SSD 750’s enterprise roots were still quite apparent. When Samsung introduced the 960 PRO and 960 EVO generation, performance jumped again thanks in large part to their much improved second-generation NVMe controller. The 970 EVO brings another generation of new controllers and NAND flash, but huge performance jumps aren’t as easy to come by. We’re closing in on the limits of PCIe 3 x4 for sequential read speeds, and there’s not much low-hanging fruit for optimization left in the NVMe controllers and how they manage flash memory. Samsung’s 3D NAND is still increasing in density, but we’re not seeing much improvement in performance or power efficiency from it.
That leaves Samsung having to make tradeoffs with the 970 EVO, sacrificing power efficiency in many places for slight performance gains. Since almost any consumer would find the 960 PRO and 960 EVO to already be plenty fast enough, this means the 970 EVO is not at all a compelling upgrade over its predecessors.
Have we reached peak SSD?

Early in 2018, the plans were laid bare: a second generation Ryzen processor was set to come in mid-year, followed by a second generation Threadripper, using GlobalFoundries’ 12nm process. This is not AMD’s next big microarchitecture, which we know is called Rome (or Zen 2) on 7nm, but an opportunity to launch a wave of components with minor improvements and take advantage of a manufacturing process that gives more frequency and more performance. Today AMD is launching four CPUs, and we have tested them all.

Samsung announced today that they are officially launching their first Z-SSD product, the SZ985. The Z-SSD uses Samsung’s Z-NAND memory, a high-performance derivative of their 3D NAND flash memory and Samsung’s intended competition for Intel’s 3D XPoint memory. The SZ985 is a high-performance, high-endurance enterprise NVMe SSD.

One of the lesser known topics around fully autonomous vehicles is one of transporting data around. There are usually two options: transport raw image and sensor data with super low latency but with high bandwidth requirements, or use encoding tools and DSPs to send fewer bits but at a higher latency. As we move into development of the first Level 4 (near autonomous) and Level 5 (fully autonomous) vehicle systems, for safety and response time reasons, low latency has won. This means shifting data around, and a lot of it.

Rather than simply repeat the same tests those drives have already been been subjected to, this review seeks to dig deeper into the performance characteristics of the Optane SSD and explore what it takes to extract the full performance of the drive. There are quite a few esoteric system settings that can have an impact, since a microsecond gained or lost matters more to an Optane SSD than to a flash-based drive.
Some notes about how things work, besides the regular review stuff.

Western Digital’s Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR) drives use platters very similar to those in the current-generation PMR drives*. This means that the innovation to enable MAMR is mainly to do with the heads that perform read and write operations.
Production-level HDDs based on MAMR technology are expected to start shipping in 2019.
